Overview
Los Angeles has one of the most favorable climates in the country for heat pump technology. Heat pumps work by moving heat from outside air into your home in winter — and reversing the process in summer to cool. In extreme cold (below 15°F), standard heat pumps lose efficiency and require supplemental electric heat to maintain comfort. But LA temperatures almost never reach those extremes. Even in the San Fernando Valley, where winter nights are the coldest in the LA basin, temperatures rarely drop below 35°F — well within the efficient operating range of a modern cold-climate heat pump.
This means that a properly sized heat pump in an LA home can meet 95%+ of your annual heating and cooling needs at efficiencies (measured as COP — Coefficient of Performance) of 2 to 4. Put simply, for every unit of electricity consumed, a heat pump delivers 2 to 4 units of heating or cooling energy. A high-efficiency gas furnace delivers less than one unit of heat per unit of energy consumed. For homeowners on LADWP or SCE's time-of-use rates who can shift electricity use to off-peak hours, the economics of heat pumps are increasingly compelling.
California's TECH Clean California program offers rebates of $1,500 to $3,000 on qualifying ducted heat pump installations for existing homes. The federal Inflation Reduction Act adds a 30% tax credit up to $2,000 for qualifying heat pump installations. Low-to-moderate income households may qualify for additional incentives that cover even more of the cost. What is TECH Clean California?
TECH Clean California is a state program that provides rebates to homeowners who switch from gas heating to electric heat pumps. Rebates range from $1,500–$3,000 for qualifying systems installed by approved contractors. We are an approved TECH Clean contractor.
Can a heat pump replace my gas furnace in Los Angeles?
Yes. In LA's climate, a heat pump is an effective complete replacement for a gas furnace. Modern cold-climate heat pumps maintain full heating capacity at outdoor temperatures well below what LA experiences.
Will my electric bill increase if I switch to a heat pump?
Your electric bill will increase but your gas bill will decrease — or go to zero. For most LA homeowners who switch from gas heat, total energy costs decrease because heat pumps are 2–3× more efficient than gas furnaces at current utility rates.
Do I need to upgrade my electrical panel for a heat pump?
Often yes. Heat pumps require a 240V circuit — typically a 30–60 amp breaker depending on system size. If your panel is older or at capacity, we'll assess and quote any needed electrical upgrades.
What is a dual-fuel heat pump?
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace backup. The heat pump handles most of the heating load; the furnace kicks in during extreme cold. Not necessary in LA's climate, but useful in colder climates.
How efficient are heat pumps vs. gas furnaces?
Gas furnaces are 80–98% efficient at converting gas to heat. Heat pumps deliver 200–400% efficiency by moving heat rather than creating it. At current SoCalGas and SCE rates in LA, heat pumps are typically 20–40% cheaper to operate than gas heating.
Can I get a federal tax credit for a heat pump?
Yes. The Inflation Reduction Act provides a 30% tax credit on qualified heat pump installations, up to $2,000 per year. This is in addition to (not instead of) state and utility rebates.
