### Why Duct Insulation Matters in Los Angeles
In Los Angeles, attics reach temperatures of 140–160°F on hot summer days. Ductwork in these attics carries conditioned air — if that ductwork is poorly insulated or has degraded insulation, the cold supply air absorbs heat from the surrounding attic air before it reaches your living space. You're paying to cool your attic. Proper duct insulation maintains supply air temperature from the air handler to the supply register, ensuring the cooling you paid for actually reaches the rooms.

### When Duct Insulation Fails
Flex duct insulation (the fiberglass wrap on the outside of flex duct) is rated for an expected service life of 15–25 years, but it degrades faster in hot, UV-exposed attics. Signs of failed duct insulation: fiberglass wrap that is compressed, torn, or missing sections; flex duct inner liner exposed to the attic environment; insulation that has settled away from duct surfaces leaving uninsulated sections. Even small uninsulated sections allow significant heat gain.
### R-8 Insulation: The California Standard
California Title 24 requires R-8 insulation on all ductwork in unconditioned spaces. Many older LA homes have R-4 or R-6 flex duct that predates the current code requirement. Re-insulating to R-8 reduces heat gain significantly. The improvement is measurable: supply air that enters the attic at 55°F and travels 20 feet in R-4 insulated flex duct can arrive at the register at 62°F or higher on a hot day. With R-8 insulation, arrival temperature stays within 2–3 degrees of the leaving air temperature.
### Combined With Duct Sealing
Duct insulation upgrades are most effective when combined with duct sealing. Leaking ducts waste conditioned air; poorly insulated ducts waste the temperature differential of the air that does reach the register. Addressing both in one project maximizes the comfort and energy efficiency improvement.
Our Service Benefits
Maintains supply air temperature
R-8 insulation keeps attic heat from warming your conditioned supply air — the cooling you paid for reaches the rooms, not the attic.
CA Title 24 compliant
We install R-8 insulation on all ductwork in unconditioned spaces, meeting current California energy code requirements.
Immediate efficiency improvement
Re-insulating ducts in an LA home with degraded insulation typically reduces cooling energy use measurably from the first billing cycle.
Often combined with duct sealing
We frequently address both insulation and sealing in a single project — maximizing the improvement per dollar invested.

Common questions about duct insulation in Los Angeles
How much does duct insulation cost in Los Angeles?
Re-insulating the ductwork in a typical LA single-family home with attic ducts runs $800–$2,500 depending on the extent of the ductwork, attic accessibility, and whether the flex duct itself needs replacement. We provide a written estimate after inspecting the attic.
How do I know if my duct insulation has failed?
If you can access your attic, look at your flex duct. If the outer gray jacket is torn, compressed flat in places, or missing sections exposing the inner liner, insulation has failed. If your duct system is more than 15–20 years old and has never been inspected, a professional assessment is worthwhile — most homeowners are surprised by the condition of their attic ductwork.
Should I replace my flex duct or just re-insulate it?
It depends on the inner liner condition. If the inner liner (the smooth inner surface that air flows through) is intact and the duct sections are not kinked or crushed, re-insulating the outer wrap is appropriate. If the inner liner is torn, disconnected at joints, or so compressed that sections can't be opened properly, full flex duct replacement is the right call.
What R-value do ducts need in California?
California Title 24 requires R-8 insulation for all supply and return ductwork in unconditioned spaces (attics, crawl spaces, garages). This requirement applies to new installations and has been the standard since 2014. Many older LA homes have R-4 or R-6 flex duct — upgrading to R-8 delivers a meaningful efficiency improvement.
Does duct insulation help with humidity too?
Somewhat. Better insulation prevents supply air from warming up before reaching registers, which helps the system maintain proper dehumidification. Cold supply air absorbs moisture from room air; warm supply air (from poorly insulated ducts) does so less effectively. The primary benefit is temperature maintenance and energy efficiency.
How long does duct insulation last?
Quality flex duct with intact insulation has a rated service life of 20–25 years. Attic heat and UV exposure (from skylights or roof deterioration) accelerate degradation. Rodent activity in attic spaces is a common cause of premature failure — we note any signs of pest activity during inspection.
Is duct insulation work messy or disruptive?
Work is confined to the attic space. We take precautions to contain attic insulation during the work. The living spaces of the home are not directly affected. Most duct insulation projects are completed in one day.
Can duct insulation be upgraded without replacing the ductwork?
Usually yes, if the duct inner liner is intact. We cut away the degraded outer insulation wrap and apply new R-8 wrap or replace the full flex duct section including insulation — whichever is more cost-effective given the specific duct condition.

“LC did a full duct inspection and found we were losing 35% of our conditioned air through disconnected joints in the attic. After sealing and repairing, the difference was immediate — better airflow, lower bills, no more hot spots.”

“Our furnace wasn't heating evenly upstairs. LC found that half of our ductwork in the attic had separated and was blowing hot air into the attic. Repaired everything and now every room heats equally. Professional and transparent.”

“Had LC install a Daikin mini split in our 1940s bungalow that never had AC. The work was clean, the unit is incredibly quiet, and our bedroom finally stays cool in summer. Highly recommend.”
