Why won't my gas furnace ignite?
The most common causes are a failed hot surface ignitor (the glowing element that lights the burners), a dirty or failed flame sensor (a safety device that verifies the burners lit), or a pressure switch failure. My furnace starts then shuts off after a few minutes. What's wrong?
Short-cycling is usually caused by a pressure switch fault (often from a restricted condensate drain on high-efficiency units), an overheating condition triggering the high-limit switch (typically a dirty filter or blocked supply registers), or a cracked heat exchanger triggering the rollout switch. Each has a different repair — accurate diagnosis is essential.
Is it safe to run my furnace if it's making a loud noise?
It depends on the noise. Grinding or squealing from the blower motor typically means a bearing failure — run the system down before more damage occurs. A loud bang at startup can indicate delayed ignition — a safety concern worth investigating. A rumbling from the burner compartment should be evaluated before continued use. When in doubt, call us.

My furnace smells like burning. Is that normal?
A brief dusty smell at the start of heating season is normal — dust burning off heat exchangers that sat idle all summer. A persistent burning smell, especially plastic or electrical, means shut the system off and call us. A sulfur or rotten egg smell near the furnace means possible gas leak — leave the building and call SoCalGas emergency line from outside, then call us.
What does a flame sensor do and why does it get dirty?
The flame sensor is a metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that ignition occurred. If the board doesn't see a signal within a few seconds, it shuts the gas off as a safety measure. Over time, oxidation builds up on the sensor rod and weakens the signal, causing nuisance shutdowns. Cleaning the sensor usually resolves it for $100–$175.
How do I know if my furnace heat exchanger is cracked?
Symptoms of a cracked heat exchanger include: CO detector alarms when the furnace runs, headache or nausea when heat is on, soot deposits near supply registers, and rollout switch trips. We perform CO combustion analysis on every furnace service call — it's the most reliable way to detect heat exchanger compromise. A cracked heat exchanger is a safety issue requiring immediate attention.
