What to expect from our mini split replacement team
### When to Replace a Mini Split vs. Repair It
Mini splits are generally reliable, and with proper maintenance they last 15–20+ years. But when a system reaches the end of its service life — or when a repair cost approaches the cost of a new, more efficient unit — replacement is the right call. The most common reasons we recommend replacement over repair: compressor failure on a unit 10+ years old (the compressor is the most expensive component and its failure often means the unit is near end of life overall), refrigerant system contamination after a major failure that requires system flushing, and units using phased-out refrigerant types that make repairs costly.

### Upgrading to Higher Efficiency
Mini split technology has advanced significantly in the past 5–7 years. Modern units are measurably more efficient (higher SEER2 and HSPF2 ratings) than units from a decade ago. If your existing unit is 10+ years old and failing, a new unit will use noticeably less electricity for the same comfort output. At current LA utility rates, the payback on the efficiency improvement is often worth factoring into the replacement decision.
### Like-for-Like vs. System Upgrade
A mini split replacement can be as simple as replacing an identical unit (same capacity, same mounting location), or it can be an opportunity to reconsider the system. We may recommend changing head types, adjusting capacity, upgrading to a higher-efficiency model, or adding zones if the original installation was single-zone and your needs have changed.
### Permits and Rebates
Mini split replacement typically doesn't require a permit if the new unit goes in the same location and uses the same electrical connection. If electrical work is required, we pull the appropriate permit. We document applicable TECH Clean California and SCE rebates for qualifying replacement equipment.
Our Service Benefits
Honest repair vs. replace guidance
We tell you when repair makes more sense and when it doesn't. We don't push replacement on systems with repair life remaining.
Efficiency upgrade
Modern mini split units are significantly more efficient than 10-year-old equipment. New units use less electricity for the same comfort output.
Rebates on replacement
Qualifying replacement equipment may be eligible for TECH Clean California and SCE rebates. We handle the documentation.
All brands available
We replace any brand with Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, LG, or Carrier — or match the existing brand if preferred.

Common questions about mini split replacement in Los Angeles
Is it worth repairing an old mini split or should I replace it?
A useful framework: if the repair cost exceeds 50% of the replacement cost and the unit is 10+ years old, replacement is usually the better investment. For younger units or less expensive repairs, repair makes sense. We give you honest repair vs. replace analysis — we don't push replacement when repair is the right call.
Can I replace my mini split with a different brand?
Yes. Any brand can be replaced with any other brand. The outdoor condenser and indoor head must be from the same manufacturer (they need to be compatible), but you can switch from one brand to another at replacement. We can also replace a budget brand with a premium-tier brand if you want better reliability or efficiency.
How long does mini split replacement take?
A straightforward like-for-like replacement (same location, same capacity, same electrical connection) typically takes 3–5 hours. We recover the old refrigerant, remove the unit, install the new unit, leak-test the connections, charge the system, and test before we leave.
How much does mini split replacement cost in Los Angeles?
A single-zone mini split replacement (outdoor and indoor unit, same location) typically runs $2,800–$5,500 depending on the brand, efficiency level, and BTU capacity. Multi-zone replacements scale with the number of indoor heads. We provide a written estimate after confirming the system specifications.
Do I need a permit to replace a mini split?
Generally no, if the replacement is in the same location with the same electrical connection. If electrical work is required (panel upgrade, new circuit), that work requires a permit. We assess what's needed and pull permits where required.
What happens to the old refrigerant?
We recover all refrigerant from the old unit using EPA 608-compliant equipment before removal. Refrigerant cannot legally be vented. All recovered refrigerant is properly reclaimed through our licensed reclamation partner.
Should I replace one zone or the whole multi-zone system?
If only one indoor head has failed, we can often replace just that head while keeping the existing outdoor condenser. This is feasible if the condenser is compatible with the new head and still has several years of life remaining. If the condenser itself is failing, replacing the full system is usually the better choice.
Are there rebates for mini split replacement?
Qualifying high-efficiency heat pump mini split replacements may be eligible for TECH Clean California rebates and SCE appliance rebates. The amounts depend on the equipment efficiency rating and size. We identify applicable rebates during the equipment selection process and handle the documentation as part of the replacement.
