### Air Filters and HVAC Performance
The air filter is the most important regular maintenance item in your HVAC system — and the most commonly neglected. A clogged filter is one of the leading causes of avoidable HVAC failures. When the filter is completely blocked, the air handler fan can't pull enough air through the system. Airflow drops, the evaporator coil temperature falls below freezing, and the coil ices over — shutting down the cooling system. In a furnace, restricted airflow causes the heat exchanger to overheat and the high-limit switch to trip.

### How Often to Change Filters in Los Angeles
The standard recommendation is every 1–3 months, but in Los Angeles the right interval depends on your specific situation. Homes with pets, high dust levels (common in the Valley during Santa Ana conditions), or household members with respiratory conditions should replace filters every 30–45 days. Homes with no pets in clean, mild environments may be fine at 90 days. The best approach: check your filter monthly and replace when it's visibly dirty — don't wait for a fixed schedule.
### Filter Selection: MERV Rating and Fit
Not all filters are created equal — and not all filters are appropriate for all HVAC systems. Standard 1-inch fiberglass filters (MERV 2–4) provide minimal filtration and should be upgraded. Pleated 1-inch MERV 7–8 filters provide good filtration without excessive resistance for most residential systems. MERV 11–13 filters provide much better filtration but require a system capable of handling the higher pressure drop — we assess this before recommending high-MERV filters. We can also size and install expanded media filter housings that allow high-efficiency filtration without the airflow penalty.

Common questions about filter replacement in Los Angeles
How often should I replace my HVAC filter in Los Angeles?
Check monthly; replace when visibly dirty. In most LA homes without pets, that's every 60–90 days. Homes with pets, heavy dust (common in Valley locations during dry, windy conditions), or household members with allergies: every 30–45 days. During Santa Ana conditions when dust levels spike, check more frequently.
What MERV rating filter should I use?
MERV 8 (pleated 1-inch) is the right starting point for most residential systems — good filtration without excessive airflow resistance. MERV 11–13 provides significantly better filtration but requires a system capable of handling the higher pressure drop. We assess your specific system before recommending any high-MERV filter. Using a MERV 13 filter in a system designed for MERV 8 can damage the equipment.
Can a dirty filter cause my AC to stop working?
Yes, directly. A severely blocked filter restricts airflow to the evaporator coil. With insufficient airflow, the coil temperature drops below freezing and ice forms on the coil, blocking all airflow. The system shuts down or blows only room-temperature air. Thawing the coil and replacing the filter usually restores operation. This is one of the most common avoidable AC failures we see.
Is a cheap fiberglass filter better than nothing?
A fiberglass MERV 2–4 filter protects the HVAC equipment from large debris — it does its intended job. It provides very little benefit for indoor air quality (it lets most dust and allergens pass through). We recommend upgrading to a pleated MERV 8 filter, which provides dramatically better air quality protection at comparable cost and with no harm to most residential HVAC systems.
Where is my HVAC filter located?
Common locations: in a filter slot at the air handler itself (look for a cover panel on the air handler cabinet), at the return air grille in a wall or ceiling (the large vent that pulls air in, rather than blowing it out), or at the bottom of a downflow furnace. If you're unsure, we'll locate and show you the filter location during any service visit.
Do I need to use the same brand filter each time?
No. Any filter that fits your dimensions and has an appropriate MERV rating for your system will work. We recommend maintaining the same MERV rating you've been using unless you've specifically assessed whether your system can handle a higher-efficiency filter. Changing from MERV 8 to MERV 13 without assessing your system's fan capacity is not advisable.
What happens if I run my HVAC without a filter?
Running without a filter allows unfiltered air — dust, pet hair, large particles — to pass directly across the evaporator coil and into the supply ductwork. The coil becomes coated with debris, reducing heat transfer efficiency. The interior of the air handler and ductwork accumulates contamination that is difficult to clean and can support mold growth. Never run without a filter, even temporarily.
Are reusable/washable filters worth it?
Washable filters are convenient but typically offer only MERV 4–8 performance, and they must be completely dry before reinstalling to prevent mold growth in the filter media. Many homeowners find the replacement filter routine simpler. For the highest indoor air quality, a high-efficiency media filter provides better filtration than most washable options.
