What causes poor indoor air quality in LA homes?
Common sources: outdoor air infiltration (traffic pollution, wildfire smoke), off-gassing from building materials and furniture (VOCs), pet dander, dust mites, cooking combustion, and mold from high humidity in coastal areas.
What is a MERV rating and what rating should I use?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively a filter captures particles. MERV 8 captures most dust and pollen. MERV 13 captures PM2.5 and wildfire smoke. MERV 16 approaches HEPA-level filtration. Higher MERV ratings restrict airflow more — we'll confirm your system can handle a higher-MERV filter before recommending one.
Should I use a portable air purifier or a whole-home system?
Portable purifiers work well for single rooms. Whole-home systems integrated into your HVAC treat every cubic foot of air in your home as it circulates. For whole-home protection, especially during wildfire season, a whole-home approach is more effective and more convenient.
How often should air filters be replaced?
Standard 1-inch filters: every 1–3 months. High-MERV 4-inch media filters: every 9–12 months. Check monthly during wildfire season — filters load faster during smoke events.
Can you test my home's air quality?
Yes. We use calibrated IAQ meters to measure PM2.5, PM10, CO2, VOCs, and humidity. We provide a report with recommended interventions.
Does a whole-home humidifier help with wildfire smoke?
Humidifiers don't remove smoke particles, but maintaining proper humidity (35–50% RH) reduces the irritation effect of dry smoke-laden air on respiratory passages and prevents dry throats and nosebleeds that make smoke exposure more uncomfortable.
What is bipolar ionization?
