What is it? The evaporator coil is the indoor component of your AC or heat pump system, usually housed within the air handler or attached to the furnace. It consists of a network of highly conductive copper or aluminum tubes filled with rapidly expanding cold liquid residential refrigerant. As warm, humid indoor air is blown over these freezing tubes, the refrigerant absorbs the thermal energy and condensation forms on the coils, actively cooling and dehumidifying the air before it is pushed back deeply into your home's ductwork.

Why it matters: Air conditioning does not 'create' cold air; it merely removes heat. What is it? Visually similar to a furnace, an air handler is the indoor component primarily used in conjunction with a heat pump or an AC-only system. Critically, an air handler has zero capabilities to burn fossil fuels. Instead, it acts as a massive circulation hub, housing the indoor evaporator coil, the master air filter rack, and a high-static blower motor to push the conditioned air provided by the outdoor unit.
