Common questions about thermostat repair in Los Angeles
How do I know if my thermostat is broken or if the HVAC system is broken?
The simplest field test: short the R and Y wires at the thermostat terminals (or at the equipment's control board). If the system starts when jumped, the thermostat or its wiring isn't delivering the command signal. If the system doesn't start when jumped, the equipment itself has a fault. We perform this diagnostic on every thermostat-related service call.
My thermostat display is blank. Is it broken?
Usually not. First check the batteries (most thermostats display a low battery indicator, but batteries can die suddenly). Then check the circuit breaker for the HVAC system — a tripped breaker cuts power to the thermostat. If batteries are good and power is present, the thermostat's power supply or the HVAC control transformer may have failed.
Can I repair a thermostat myself?
Battery replacement and loose wire tightening are homeowner-level repairs. Beyond that, the low cost of thermostat replacement relative to thermostat repair parts makes DIY repair rarely worthwhile. If the wiring is the problem, we can fix it; if the electronics have failed, replacement is the practical answer.
How much does thermostat repair cost?
Simple repairs like tightening loose wiring or cleaning contacts: typically addressed as part of the diagnostic service call ($85–$125). If the thermostat requires replacement, that's $150–$450 depending on the replacement thermostat selected. We provide a written estimate after diagnosis.
My thermostat reads the wrong temperature. What does that mean?
Electronic thermostats use an NTC (negative temperature coefficient) thermistor to measure room temperature. These sensors can drift over time or fail outright, causing the displayed temperature to be several degrees off from actual room temperature. When the thermostat's temperature reading is wrong, the system cycles at the wrong time. Thermostat replacement resolves this.
My system runs continuously and won't shut off. Is that the thermostat?
It could be. A thermostat with stuck relay contacts continues to send the "run" signal even when the setpoint has been reached. Test by turning the thermostat off entirely — if the system continues to run, the problem is in the HVAC equipment's control board, not the thermostat. If the system stops when the thermostat is turned off, the thermostat is likely the fault.
Do you repair smart thermostats?
Smart thermostat hardware failures (Wi-Fi module failure, display failure) are generally not repairable cost-effectively — the device is replaced. We can resolve smart thermostat configuration issues, wiring problems, and compatibility problems that cause incorrect system operation. These are usually resolvable without replacing the thermostat.
My heat pump thermostat is making my system run in cooling when I call for heat. Why?
This is almost always an O/B wire configuration issue. Heat pump thermostats have an O/B terminal that controls the reversing valve. The thermostat needs to be set for whether the O/B wire activates the valve in heating mode (B wiring, Rheem/Ruud standard) or cooling mode (O wiring, most other brands). A misconfigured O/B setting causes the heat pump to run the wrong mode.
