### How Heat Pump Failures Differ from Standard AC
Heat pumps have most of the same components as standard air conditioners (compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, expansion device, capacitors, contactors) plus additional components that enable reversible operation: the reversing valve (which switches the system between heating and cooling mode) and the defrost control system. Heat pump failures that don't occur on standard AC systems include: reversing valve failures that cause the system to stay stuck in one mode, defrost board failures that cause ice buildup on the outdoor unit, and check valve failures that affect one operating mode but not the other.
### Reversing Valve Diagnosis
The reversing valve is the component most unique to heat pump systems, and it's a common failure point. A stuck reversing valve causes the system to provide cooling when heating is called for, or vice versa — or to produce very little output in one mode while performing normally in the other. Reversing valve diagnosis requires measuring refrigerant pressures in both operating modes and comparing the results against expected values. We carry reversing valves for all major brands.
### Emergency Heat Mode
If your heat pump is not providing heat, you may have an "emergency heat" or "auxiliary heat" setting on your thermostat. Switching to this mode activates a backup resistance heat strip, bypassing the heat pump. Common questions about heat pump repair in Los Angeles
Why does my heat pump provide cooling but not heating?
This is a classic reversing valve symptom. The reversing valve is an electrically actuated four-way valve that switches the refrigerant circuit direction between heating and cooling modes. When it sticks in the cooling position, the system cools in both modes. When it sticks in the heating position, it heats in both modes. Reversing valve replacement is typically a $400–$650 repair.
Why is my heat pump outdoor unit covered in ice?
Heat pumps in heating mode extract heat from outdoor air, causing the outdoor coil temperature to drop below freezing — some frost is normal. Heat pumps have a defrost cycle that periodically melts the frost. If the outdoor unit is completely encased in ice and the system isn't defrosting, you likely have a defrost board failure, a refrigerant issue, or an airflow problem.
What is emergency heat mode on a heat pump?
Emergency heat mode bypasses the heat pump and runs the backup resistance heat strips only. It provides heat when the heat pump is malfunctioning, but uses significantly more electricity. If your thermostat is showing "EM HEAT" or "AUX HEAT" running all the time when it shouldn't be, your heat pump likely needs service.

My heat pump is making a loud clicking noise when it starts. What is that?
A single click when starting is normal — that's the contactor closing. Repeated clicking, especially if the unit doesn't start, usually means the capacitor is failing (it can't provide enough starting current for the compressor). Clicking from inside the unit when switching modes is the reversing valve solenoid actuating — normal.
Should I try to defrost my heat pump myself if it's iced over?
You can turn the system off and let it defrost naturally in mild temperatures. You can also run the system in cooling mode (which reverses the refrigerant flow and melts the ice on the outdoor coil) for 10–15 minutes if temperatures are above 50°F. Do not pour hot water on the outdoor coil or attempt to chip ice off the coil — this can damage the aluminum fins.
How do I know if my heat pump or the backup heat strips are providing heat?
Most heat pump thermostats show "HEAT" when the heat pump is operating and "AUX HEAT" or "EM HEAT" when the backup strips are running. If your system shows AUX HEAT running frequently in LA's mild weather (above 40°F), the heat pump isn't functioning properly in heating mode and needs service.
