Do I really need furnace maintenance in mild LA winters?
Yes. The relatively few heating hours per year in LA mean that problems are less likely to reveal themselves through operational failure. A cracked heat exchanger might never cause a noticeable performance issue — you'd only know it's there through a CO analysis. The safety inspection component is, if anything, more important precisely because the system runs infrequently.
What is a flame sensor and why does it need cleaning?
The flame sensor is a small metal rod that sits in the burner flame and confirms to the control board that ignition occurred. Over time, oxidation builds up on the sensor rod and weakens the signal, causing nuisance shutdowns. Cleaning the sensor with fine steel wool (2 minutes of work) usually resolves it completely — and it's checked on every maintenance visit.
My furnace is 20 years old. Is maintenance worth it?
Yes, until a diagnosis tells you otherwise. A 20-year-old furnace that has been maintained and has an intact heat exchanger can run reliably for several more years. Maintenance tells you the condition of the heat exchanger (the critical safety item) and helps you plan rather than being surprised by unexpected failure.
Can a dirty furnace cause carbon monoxide problems?
A dirty burner or restricted flue can create incomplete combustion that produces elevated CO. More commonly, CO risk comes from a cracked heat exchanger that allows combustion gases to mix with circulated air. This develops gradually and requires proper combustion analysis to detect — which is why we perform CO analysis on every furnace service visit.
