### New Duct Installation in Los Angeles Homes

### Duct System Design
A properly designed duct system is engineered, not improvised. We use Manual D (the ACCA standard for duct design, companion to Manual J) to calculate supply and return duct sizing for each room, determine optimal supply register locations and throw patterns, calculate system static pressure to ensure the air handler's fan can deliver the designed airflow, and route the duct system to minimize length and bends. A well-designed duct system delivers comfort; a poorly designed one creates complaints that no amount of equipment maintenance will resolve.
### Types of Ductwork We Install
Flex duct is the most common residential duct material in LA — it's flexible, relatively inexpensive, and can navigate around obstructions in attic spaces. Sheet metal ductwork is used for main trunk lines, supply plenums, and in applications where durability and airflow efficiency are prioritized. Duct board (fiberglass board) is used in some applications, particularly for custom plenums. We select the appropriate material for each application.
### Insulation and Code Requirements
All ductwork in unconditioned spaces (attics, crawl spaces) must be insulated per California Title 24. New duct installation includes R-8 insulation wrapping on all sections in unconditioned spaces, proper duct sealing with mastic at all joints, and a duct leakage test as part of the permit sign-off process.

How much does new duct installation cost in Los Angeles?
New duct installation for a typical 1,500–2,000 sq ft LA home runs $3,000–$7,000 depending on the complexity of the routing, number of rooms, and duct material selection. How long does duct installation take?
A complete new duct installation for a typical LA single-family home takes 1–3 days depending on complexity. Homes requiring extensive wall penetrations or difficult attic access take longer. We provide an accurate timeline in the project proposal.
Can ductwork be added to any home?
In most homes, yes — though the cost and invasiveness varies significantly. Homes with large attic spaces (common in LA) are the easiest — ductwork routes through the attic with minimal wall penetration. Homes with flat roofs, concrete construction, or no attic access require more creative routing solutions that increase cost. For some homes, a ductless mini split system is a more practical solution.
What is Manual D duct design?
Manual D is the ACCA standard for residential duct system design. It calculates the required airflow for each room (from the Manual J load calculation), sizes each duct section to deliver that airflow without excessive friction loss, and determines register sizes and locations for optimal air distribution. It's the engineering basis for a duct system that actually performs as designed.
What insulation is required on new ductwork in LA?
California Title 24 requires minimum R-8 insulation on all ductwork in unconditioned spaces (attics, crawl spaces). We install R-8 flex duct and R-8 wrap on all sheet metal sections in unconditioned spaces as standard on every installation.
Do I need a permit for new duct installation?
Yes. New duct installation is permitted mechanical work in California. Permits are required when installing new ductwork for a new HVAC system, when replacing a significant portion of the existing duct system, and when modifying the duct system in conjunction with HVAC equipment replacement. We pull all required permits and schedule inspections.
Should I use flex duct or sheet metal?
Both have appropriate applications. Flex duct is cost-effective, flexible for navigating obstacles, and performs well when installed correctly (fully extended, properly supported, minimal bends). Sheet metal is more rigid, lower friction for long straight runs, and more durable. We typically use sheet metal for main trunk lines and supply plenums, and flex duct for individual room take-offs and in areas requiring flexibility.
Can new ductwork improve my home's air quality?
Yes, significantly. New ductwork eliminates the air quality problems associated with old ductwork: contaminated insulation exposed by inner liner tears, accumulated debris in old metal ducts, and attic air intrusion through leaks. New ductwork with sealed connections and intact insulation delivers filtered conditioned air without these contamination pathways.
