### How Multi-Zone Systems Work
A multi-zone system consists of a single multi-port outdoor condenser and two to eight indoor units (heads) distributed through the home. Each indoor unit has its own thermostat and operates independently — the bedroom can be set to 70°F while the living room runs at 74°F, or zones can be turned off entirely when rooms aren't occupied. This independent zone control is not possible with traditional ducted HVAC without expensive zone control systems.
### Design Matters: Getting the Zone Layout Right
The most important factor in a multi-zone installation is zone design — determining how many heads are needed, where they should be positioned, and what capacity each head needs. We perform heating and cooling load calculations for each zone and design the refrigerant line set routing to maximize efficiency and minimize visual impact. A poorly designed multi-zone installation results in some zones over-cooling and others struggling — we get the design right before any equipment is selected.

How many zones can a multi-zone mini split system support?
Most residential multi-zone condensers support 2–8 indoor units. The condenser capacity limits the total cooling and heating load across all zones simultaneously. We size the condenser to handle the expected simultaneous load — typically somewhat less than the sum of all individual zone loads since all rooms rarely need maximum output at the same time.
Can all zones run simultaneously?
Yes, though the total system capacity is shared across running zones. The outdoor condenser modulates output based on total demand. If all zones are calling simultaneously at high output, each zone receives proportionally less. We size the system to handle expected peak simultaneous loads comfortably.
How much does a multi-zone mini split system cost in Los Angeles?
A 2-zone system (one outdoor condenser and two indoor heads) typically runs $4,500–$7,500 installed. A 4-zone system: $8,000–$14,000. Pricing varies by system capacity, brands, indoor head types, and line set routing complexity. We provide a detailed written estimate after the design assessment.
Where can the indoor heads be mounted?
Mini split indoor heads are available in several mounting configurations: wall-mounted high on the wall (most common), ceiling cassette (mounts flush in the ceiling, air discharges in four directions), concealed duct (mounts in ceiling or wall cavity, connects to short duct runs), and floor-mounted units. We select the best type for each room based on layout and aesthetics.
How visible are the refrigerant lines?
Where refrigerant lines run through conditioned spaces, they are covered with white PVC line hide (raceway) that runs along walls or ceilings. In most installations we run lines through walls or ceilings where possible to minimize visible runs. The routing is planned during the design phase — we show you the planned line set path before installation begins.
Do multi-zone mini splits provide heating too?
Yes. All modern mini split systems are heat pump systems — they provide both cooling and heating. In heating mode they're 2–3x more efficient than resistance electric heat. For LA's mild winters, multi-zone mini splits are effective and efficient heating solutions that eliminate the need for wall furnaces or space heaters.
