### Types of Mechanical Ventilation
The simplest form is exhaust-only: a bath fan or dedicated exhaust fan that pulls stale indoor air out, drawing fresh outdoor air through building gaps. More sophisticated are supply ventilation systems that introduce filtered outside air into the HVAC return duct. Most effective — and increasingly required in California — are balanced systems: Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERVs) that exchange stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air while recovering most of the energy from the outgoing air.

Does my LA home need mechanical ventilation?
New construction and substantially renovated homes in California are required to have mechanical ventilation under Title 24. Older existing homes often have adequate natural ventilation through building envelope leakage, but tighter, better-insulated homes may not. If you notice stale air, persistent odors, or elevated indoor humidity, a ventilation assessment is worthwhile.
What is an ERV and how does it work?
An Energy Recovery Ventilator simultaneously exhausts stale indoor air and introduces fresh outdoor air, using a heat exchange core to transfer heat and moisture between the two airstreams. In summer, it pre-cools incoming fresh air using the outgoing exhaust air. In winter, it pre-warms incoming air. The result is continuous fresh air with minimal energy penalty.
How much does ventilation installation cost in Los Angeles?
Bath exhaust fan replacement: $150–$350 installed. Whole-home ERV system: $2,500–$4,500 installed depending on home size and duct integration complexity. Dedicated supply ventilation: $800–$2,000. We provide a written estimate after assessing your specific situation.
Can I just open windows instead of installing ventilation?
Window ventilation works when outdoor air quality is good and temperatures are comfortable — which is much of the year in LA. However, during fire season when AQI is poor, during extreme heat, or in homes where security limits window use, mechanical ventilation with filtration provides fresh air without these limitations.
My bath fan vents into the attic. Is that a problem?
Yes. Exhaust fans dumping into attic spaces discharge moisture-laden air that promotes mold growth and structural moisture damage. California plumbing code requires exhaust fans to vent to the exterior. Rerouting an existing attic-dumping exhaust fan is typically a straightforward project.
What is makeup air and does my range hood need it?
High-CFM commercial-style range hoods (600+ CFM) can depressurize the kitchen enough to pull combustion gases backward down gas appliance flues — a safety concern. Makeup air systems introduce replacement air to compensate. California code requires makeup air for range hoods above 400 CFM. We assess and install makeup air systems for high-CFM range hoods.
Does ventilation affect my heating and cooling costs?
Without energy recovery, yes — conditioning introduced outdoor air adds to the load. With an ERV, the energy penalty is typically 10–20% of what it would be without recovery. The exact impact depends on how much ventilation is required, your climate, and the ERV efficiency rating.
How do I know if my home has adequate ventilation?
Signs of inadequate ventilation: persistent musty or stale smells, condensation on windows during cool weather, respiratory symptoms that seem worse indoors, and elevated CO₂ levels (measurable with inexpensive sensors). A professional assessment can measure your home's actual ventilation rate and compare it to ASHRAE 62.2 recommendations.
