Electronic air cleaners (electrostatic precipitators) charge particles electrostatically so they adhere to collection plates — highly effective but require regular cleaning. HEPA filtration systems provide the highest particle filtration efficiency (0.3 microns at 99.97%) but require a bypass configuration to avoid excessive pressure drop on the HVAC system. Whole-home air purifiers are installed in the return air duct upstream of the air handler — all circulated air passes through the purifier before reaching the HVAC system and being distributed through the supply ductwork. Common questions about air purifier installation in Los Angeles
What is the difference between a MERV rating and HEPA?
MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates filters from 1–16 on a scale measuring capture efficiency across a range of particle sizes. MERV 13 captures 90%+ of particles 0.3–1 micron. HEPA is a separate standard requiring 99.97% capture of 0.3-micron particles — higher efficiency than any MERV rating. HEPA is the gold standard but requires a bypass configuration in whole-home applications due to its high airflow resistance.
Will a high-MERV filter damage my HVAC system?
It can, if not properly matched to your system's fan capacity. MERV 13–16 filters have significantly higher airflow resistance than standard MERV 4–8 filters. If your air handler's fan can't overcome the additional resistance, airflow drops — leading to freezing evaporator coils, reduced capacity, and increased fan motor stress. We check your system's static pressure tolerance before recommending any high-MERV solution.
How often do whole-home air purifier filters need replacement?
Media filters: typically every 6–12 months depending on air quality and usage. Electronic air cleaner collection cells: cleaning every 1–3 months. HEPA bypass systems: HEPA element replacement every 1–3 years. We advise on the specific maintenance schedule for the system we install.

Do portable room air purifiers work as well as whole-home systems?
Portable room purifiers are effective within the room they're placed in and can achieve very high filtration efficiency within that space. They're a good solution for a specific bedroom or living area. Whole-home systems treat all rooms simultaneously, including during sleep when the HVAC is circulating air through bedrooms — something a portable unit in the living room doesn't accomplish.
Does air purification help with COVID or other airborne pathogens?
MERV 13+ filtration captures a significant percentage of respiratory aerosols that can carry airborne pathogens. The CDC has recommended MERV 13 or better filtration as one layer of defense in reducing airborne transmission in indoor spaces. UV-C light systems add an additional pathogen inactivation mechanism. Neither eliminates transmission risk, but both meaningfully reduce it.
Can I just use a MERV 13 filter in my existing filter slot?
Only if your system's fan has adequate static pressure capacity for the higher resistance. Many LA homes have older HVAC systems with fans designed for 1-inch MERV 4–8 filters. Dropping in a 1-inch MERV 13 filter causes significant airflow restriction. The proper solution is an expanded media filter housing that accommodates a 4–5 inch thick MERV 13 filter — same efficiency at much lower airflow resistance.
Is an electronic air cleaner better than a media filter?
Each has advantages. Electronic air cleaners (electrostatic precipitators) have very low airflow resistance and high particle capture efficiency, but produce trace ozone and require regular cleaning of the collection plates. Media filters have no ozone production, require no maintenance beyond periodic replacement, but have higher airflow resistance. For most LA homes, a high-MERV media filter in an expanded housing is the simpler and more maintenance-friendly solution.
