What to expect from LC Heating & Air

A broken furnace in LA might not mean subzero temperatures, but temperatures drop into the 40s in Hollywood winters and the 30s in the San Fernando Valley. LC Heating & Air repairs all types of furnaces β€” gas, electric, heat pump, and dual-fuel β€” throughout Greater Los Angeles. We prioritize furnace calls because a failed heat exchanger or gas leak can be dangerous. We respond quickly and diagnose safely. View our recommended Heat Strip β†’

Overview

Furnace failures in Los Angeles are more common than most homeowners expect. Many LA homes have furnaces that are 20 or even 30 years old β€” they run infrequently enough that homeowners do not notice gradual decline until the system fails completely during the first cold snap of the season. The most common failures we see in older LA furnaces: igniter failure (the hot surface igniter is a wear item that typically lasts 5 to 7 years), cracked heat exchangers (a serious safety issue that allows combustion gases to enter living spaces), failed blower motors, dirty flame sensors that cause nuisance shutdowns, and degraded draft inducer motors that affect combustion safety.

Heat exchanger cracks are a particular concern in older LA furnaces. A cracked heat exchanger allows carbon monoxide β€” a colorless, odorless gas β€” to mix with the conditioned air and distribute throughout your home. We inspect heat exchangers on every furnace repair call and on every maintenance visit, and we will never advise operating a furnace with a confirmed heat exchanger crack. In many cases, a cracked heat exchanger in an older furnace is the trigger to evaluate replacement β€” the repair cost is often not economically justified relative to the age of the equipment.

LC Heating & Air repairs all major furnace brands: Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Rheem, Goodman, York, American Standard, Bryant, Heil, and others. We diagnose gas, electric, and dual-fuel systems. Most repairs are completed in a single visit. We carry common igniter types, flame sensors, capacitors, and control boards on our service trucks to avoid return trips for parts.

What Los Angeles Homeowners Say

β€œOur furnace wasn't heating evenly upstairs. LC found that half of our ductwork in the attic had separated and was blowing hot air into the attic. Repaired everything and now every room heats equally. Professional and transparent.”

S
Sarah T.Studio City, CA

β€œFurnace was making a loud banging noise every time it started. LC diagnosed delayed ignition from dirty burners. Cleaned and tuned the whole system, tested CO levels, explained everything clearly. No upsell, fair price.”

K
Kevin A.Burbank, CA

β€œCalled LC because our CO detector went off. Their technician found a crack in the heat exchanger and immediately shut down the furnace. He explained the safety issue clearly, provided a replacement estimate, and didn't try to scare us β€” just facts. We replaced the system the following week.”

Carbon Monoxide Safety and Furnace Repair

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced by incomplete combustion in gas furnaces. A properly functioning furnace contains all combustion gases within the heat exchanger and vents them safely outside through the flue. When a heat exchanger develops cracks β€” which happens over time due to the repeated heating and cooling cycles that cause metal fatigue β€” combustion gases can leak into the conditioned airstream and distribute throughout your home. According to the CDC, carbon monoxide poisoning causes over 400 deaths per year in the United States.

LC Heating & Air performs a carbon monoxide safety check on every furnace repair call. We measure CO levels at the furnace plenum, the supply registers, and in the ambient room air. We visually inspect the heat exchanger surface and use a camera inspection when visual access is limited. If we detect elevated CO levels or a confirmed heat exchanger crack, we will shut off the furnace immediately and advise against operating it until the issue is resolved.

If you do not already have CO detectors in your home, install them now β€” at minimum, one outside each sleeping area and one on each floor. CO detectors cost $20-40 each and they save lives. California law requires CO detectors in all residential dwellings with fossil fuel appliances. This is not optional equipment.

Furnace Maintenance Prevents Emergency Repairs

The majority of emergency furnace repair calls we receive in Los Angeles are for issues that would have been caught during annual maintenance. A dirty flame sensor that causes nuisance lockouts. A cracked ignitor that finally fails on the coldest night of the year. A failing draft inducer motor that was making unusual noise for weeks before it seized. A clogged condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace that eventually triggers a safety shutdown. All of these are predictable failure modes that a trained technician identifies during a maintenance visit.

Annual furnace maintenance β€” ideally performed in September or October before heating season β€” includes inspection and testing of every safety and operational component. We clean the burner assembly, test the flame sensor, verify the ignition sequence, inspect the heat exchanger, test the safety limit switches, check the draft inducer, verify proper venting, and test CO levels. The cost of annual maintenance ($90-$150) is a fraction of a single emergency repair call, and it extends the operational life of the furnace by years.

LC Heating & Air offers annual maintenance plans that include both a fall furnace tune-up and a spring AC tune-up, plus priority scheduling and repair discounts for plan members. Most of our maintenance plan customers go years without needing an emergency repair call because we catch developing issues before they become failures.

FAQ

Common questions about furnace repair in Los Angeles

My furnace runs but produces no heat β€” why?
Common causes: failed ignitor, dirty flame sensor, tripped high-limit switch, failed gas valve, or a thermostat issue. We diagnose all of these with our standard furnace inspection.
Why is my furnace making a loud banging noise?
Banging at startup is often "delayed ignition" β€” gas builds up before the ignitor fires. This stresses the heat exchanger. It needs immediate attention. Banging during operation can be a dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger.
How do I know if my furnace heat exchanger is cracked?
Signs include: visible soot marks near the furnace, CO detector alarms, yellow or flickering flame, or smell of combustion gases in living areas. A cracked heat exchanger is a CO safety emergency β€” call us immediately.
Why does my furnace short-cycle (turn on and off constantly)?
Short-cycling is usually caused by a dirty air filter restricting airflow (check this first), an oversized furnace, a faulty thermostat, or a tripped high-limit switch. It can also indicate a heat exchanger problem.
Do you repair electric furnaces as well as gas?
Yes. We repair both gas and electric furnaces, as well as oil furnaces and boilers.
How often should my furnace be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in the fall before heating season. Annual maintenance catches failing components before they cause a breakdown and verifies safety.
What's the difference between furnace repair and furnace tune-up?
A tune-up is preventive maintenance β€” cleaning, inspection, and testing to prevent failures. A repair addresses an existing problem. We recommend a tune-up every year and a repair whenever something breaks.
Can you fix my furnace the same day?
In most cases, yes. We offer same-day furnace repair service throughout LA and stock parts for common repairs on our trucks. Call (323) 970-3113 and we'll get to you as fast as possible.
