Why won't my gas wall heater pilot stay lit?
This is almost always a failed thermocouple. The thermocouple is a safety device — a temperature-sensing probe that sits in the pilot flame and signals the gas valve to stay open. When it degrades, it doesn't produce enough millivoltage to hold the gas valve open, and the pilot goes out when you release the pilot knob. Thermocouple replacement is typically a $125–$200 repair.
Is it safe to use an older gas wall heater?
Older gas wall heaters can be safe if properly maintained. Key safety items: the thermocouple should be tested and working, the burner should produce a blue flame, draft should be adequate to vent combustion gases, and the heater should be clear of combustibles.
