What to expect from our uv light installation team
### UV-C Lights in HVAC Systems
Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) germicidal light systems installed inside HVAC equipment use the same technology that hospitals and water treatment plants rely on to neutralize biological contaminants. When installed in an HVAC system, UV-C lights continuously irradiate the evaporator coil and surrounding air handler surfaces — the areas most prone to mold and biofilm growth in the warm, wet environment of a cooling system. LC Heating & Air installs germicidal UV-C systems throughout Greater Los Angeles.

### Two Types of HVAC UV Systems
Coil-sterilization UV systems install a UV-C lamp directly in front of the evaporator coil. The lamp runs continuously (or whenever the air handler runs) and prevents mold and biofilm from establishing on the coil surface. This is the most common and effective UV application in residential HVAC — keeping the coil clean dramatically reduces the musty smell that many LA homeowners notice when their AC runs, particularly in humid coastal areas. Air-sterilization UV systems install in the return duct and use stronger lamps to neutralize pathogens in moving air — more effective for airborne biological concerns but requiring higher-intensity lamps for adequate exposure time.
### Why Mold on Evaporator Coils Is a Real Problem in LA
The evaporator coil is a perfect environment for biological growth: it alternates between cool and damp (when the AC runs) and warm and humid (when the AC is off). This wet-dry cycle, combined with the organic matter captured on the coil surface, supports mold and bacteria growth that is then distributed through the supply ductwork into the living space. A UV coil sterilization system disrupts this cycle — keeping the coil surface biologically clean without chemicals.
### Installation Details
Coil UV installation requires accessing the air handler, cutting a small access port if one doesn't exist, and installing the UV lamp assembly and power supply. Installation typically takes 60–90 minutes. We recommend replacing UV bulbs annually — they lose germicidal effectiveness before they burn out visually.
Our Service Benefits
Eliminates coil mold
Continuous UV-C irradiation prevents mold and biofilm from establishing on the evaporator coil — the primary source of HVAC-related musty odors.
Improves air handler efficiency
A biologically clean coil maintains proper heat transfer efficiency. Biofilm acts as an insulating layer that reduces cooling output.
Low maintenance
Annual bulb replacement is the only maintenance required. Lamps are designed to operate continuously for a full year before replacement.
Works alongside filtration
UV-C and high-efficiency filtration address different problems — filtration captures particles, UV neutralizes biological growth on surfaces. Both together provide comprehensive IAQ protection.

Common questions about uv light installation in Los Angeles
Do HVAC UV lights really work?
Yes, for their specific application. UV-C coil sterilization systems are well-supported by evidence for preventing mold and biofilm growth on evaporator coil surfaces. The key is proper placement — the lamp must be positioned so the coil surface receives adequate UV-C irradiance. Air-sterilization systems (for airborne pathogens in moving air) require high-intensity lamps because exposure time is very short.
Is UV-C light safe?
UV-C light is harmful to eyes and skin with direct exposure — this is the same mechanism that makes it effective against biological organisms. HVAC UV systems are enclosed in the air handler and sealed access panels. When we install UV systems, we include access covers over the inspection ports to prevent accidental exposure during maintenance. The light never directly irradiates the conditioned living space.
Do UV lights produce ozone?
Standard UV-C germicidal lamps (254nm wavelength) do not produce significant ozone. Some UV systems use different wavelengths or lamp types that do produce ozone — we avoid these for residential applications. Our recommended coil sterilization systems use standard germicidal UV-C that does not produce ozone at levels of concern.
How much does HVAC UV light installation cost in Los Angeles?
Coil sterilization UV system installation: $300–$550 installed, including the lamp unit and all wiring. Air-sterilization UV systems (in-duct): $500–$900 installed. Annual replacement bulbs run $30–$80 depending on the system. We provide a written estimate for your specific air handler configuration.
How long do UV-C lamps last in an HVAC system?
UV-C lamps maintain effective germicidal output for approximately 9,000–10,000 hours — roughly 12 months of continuous operation (or about 2 years if the lamp only runs when the air handler fan is running). After this point, the lamp typically still glows but has lost most of its UV-C output. Annual replacement is the standard recommendation.
Will UV lights damage my HVAC equipment?
Quality UV systems designed for HVAC applications will not damage equipment when properly installed. However, prolonged UV-C exposure to certain polymers (flex duct material, some insulation types) can cause degradation over time. We use UV-resistant mounting hardware and ensure the lamp is oriented to irradiate the coil rather than the surrounding duct or cabinet materials.
Do I need UV lights if I already have a high-MERV filter?
They address different problems. High-MERV filtration captures airborne particles including mold spores before they reach the coil. UV-C prevents mold from growing on the coil surface itself — where filtered air doesn't help because the coil surface accumulates moisture and organic matter regardless of upstream filtration. The two systems are complementary.
Can UV lights be installed on any HVAC system?
UV systems can be installed on most air handler configurations, though the specific lamp size and mounting hardware varies by air handler type. We assess your specific air handler during the consultation and confirm compatibility before installation. The most common exception is very compact air handlers in tight closets where physical access is extremely limited.
