Understanding Heat Strips

What is it? A heat strip (frequently called an electric resistance heater or auxiliary heat) is a massive grid of coiled, high-resistance wire housed directly inside an air handler. It functions on the exact same thermodynamic principles as a giant industrial toaster, using 240-volt raw electricity to generate blistering heat instantly. It serves primarily as a Stage 2 or Emergency backup heating source for heat pump driven systems.

Why it matters: While heat pumps are incredibly efficient, if the mechanical compressor breaks down in the dead of winter, or a freak deep-freeze rolls through knocking the heat pump's efficiency down, the heat strip guarantees the home remains warm and pipes do not freeze. It provides instantaneous, overwhelmingly powerful heat, though at a significantly higher electricity usage rate than the heat pump.

Signs of Failure

  • Pungent, electrical burning smell that lingers well past the initial winter start-up
  • System blows frigid air when the thermostat is manually forced into 'Emergency Heat' mode
  • Inexplicably high, catastrophic electric bills (indicating the heat strips are stuck in the ON position)
  • Tripped high-voltage electrical breakers at the main panel when heating kicks on

Common Questions

Are heat strips expensive to run?
Extremely. Electric resistance heating boasts a Coefficient of Performance of exactly 1.0 (1 unit of electricity = 1 unit of heat). Heat pumps routinely achieve a 3.0+. Running a massive 15kW heat strip uses immense electrical wattage. Therefore, it is only programmed to activate momentarily to assist the heat pump, or if the heat pump fatally fails.
Do I actually need a heat strip in Southern California?
Technically, no. Because the Los Angeles basin essentially never freezes, modern heat pumps handle 100% of the heating load effortlessly. However, many homeowners still choose to install a small 5kW heat strip simply as a cheap $200 'insurance policy' so they still have heat if a tree branch destroys their outdoor heat pump mid-winter.
Why did my fire alarm go off the first time I used the heater?
During the 8 months of summer, substantial amounts of ambient dust settle directly onto the coil wires of the heat strip. The very first time it kicks on in November, it instantly incinerates that dust at 400°F. This creates a very brief burst of smoke and a burning odor. It is completely normal and dissipates within 5 minutes.
What is 'Emergency Heat' mode on my thermostat?
When you flip to 'Emergency Heat', you are instructing the thermostat to completely shut down and ignore the damaged outdoor heat pump compressor, and rely entirely on pulling brute-force electricity through the indoor heat strip to warm the home until a technician arrives.
Can I add a heat strip to my existing unit?
If you have an all-in-one electric Air Handler, yes, heat strips can be purchased as insertable cartridges and easily wired into the cabinet by a technician. If you have a Gas Furnace, a heat strip cannot be integrated, as the furnace relies on raw flame combustion for internal heating.
