Understanding Air Handlers

What is it? Visually similar to a furnace, an air handler is the indoor component primarily used in conjunction with a heat pump or an AC-only system. Critically, an air handler has zero capabilities to burn fossil fuels. Instead, it acts as a massive circulation hub, housing the indoor evaporator coil, the master air filter rack, and a high-static blower motor to push the conditioned air provided by the outdoor unit.

Why it matters: The air handler dictates the volume and quality of air in your home. Upgrading to an air handler with a modern ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) provides radically superior humidity extraction during the summer. By running the blower at a very slow, continuous speed, it wrings out sticky moisture from the air while remaining whisper-quiet, transforming the overall comfort of the home.

Signs of Failure

  • Weak, anemic, or completely nonexistent airflow emerging from the ceiling registers
  • Blower motor emits a loud 60Hz electrical hum but refuses to spin
  • Noticeable massive increase in ambient dust accumulating in the home
  • Violent rattling or metal-on-metal vibrating whenever the system kicks on
  • Distinctly 'dirty sock' or musty odors blowing from the vents

Common Questions

Can I use an air handler if I currently have a gas furnace?
If you remove the gas furnace, yes. A functional gas furnace already contains its own massive blower motor and pairs with a standalone, unpowered 'Evaporator Coil'. An Air Handler is an all-in-one powered cabinet designed strictly to replace the furnace entirely, ideal for homeowners switching to 100% electric Heat Pumps.
What is an ECM motor and why should I upgrade to one?
ECM stands for Electronically Commutated Motor. It is a highly intelligent, programmable variable-speed brushless DC motor. Compared to archaic AC motors, ECMs use 75% less electricity, ramp up smoothly instead of jarringly turning on, and dynamically adjust their torque if they sense dirty air filters.
Why does my air handler smell musty (Dirty Sock Syndrome)?
Because air handlers operate in dark, cool, profoundly damp environments, they are prime real estate for bacterial colonies to thrive on the aluminum coils. When the fan turns on, it blows the smell of these colonies into the house. Installing a high-output UV-C light inside the air handler completely sterilizes the interior and destroys the smell.
How often should I change the filter in my air handler?
For standard 1-inch pleated filters, they must be changed religiously every 30-60 days. If you upgrade the air handler to accommodate a 4-inch or 5-inch deep media filter, you only need to swap it out once every 6 to 12 months, while enjoying hospital-grade MERV 11-16 filtration.
Can an air handler provide heat on its own?
No. By default, it only circulates air. However, a high-voltage auxiliary 'Heat Strip' can be easily slotted inside the air handler cabinet to provide backup electric resistance heating in the event the primary heat pump fails or the weather drops below freezing.
