Understanding Evaporator Coils

What is it? The evaporator coil is the indoor component of your AC or heat pump system, usually housed within the air handler or attached to the furnace. It consists of a network of highly conductive copper or aluminum tubes filled with rapidly expanding cold liquid residential refrigerant. As warm, humid indoor air is blown over these freezing tubes, the refrigerant absorbs the thermal energy and condensation forms on the coils, actively cooling and dehumidifying the air before it is pushed back deeply into your home's ductwork.

Why it matters: Air conditioning does not 'create' cold air; it merely removes heat. Without a pristine, highly-conductive evaporator coil, your system physically cannot transfer heat from your home's interior to the outside condenser. Even a microscopic layer of dust or pet hair on the coil surfaces can act as an insulating blanket, drastically reducing your system’s heat-transfer efficiency, causing the compressor to overwork, and driving up electricity bills exponentially.

Signs of Failure

  • AC runs constantly but fails to lower the ambient home temperature
  • Warm, muggy air is blowing from the supply vents
  • Thick ice building up on the indoor coil enclosure or outdoor copper lines
  • Audible hissing or bubbling sounds (indicating a pressurized refrigerant leak in the coil)
  • Unusual water pools around the base of the indoor unit

Common Questions

Why does my evaporator coil freeze into a block of ice?
Evaporator coils freeze due to the Joule-Thomson effect when there isn't enough warm air blowing over them (usually caused by a severely clogged air filter or blocked return vents) or when the system is starved of refrigerant. If the coil freezes, turn off the AC immediately to prevent fatal liquid slugging in the outdoor compressor.
Can an evaporator coil be repaired if it leaks?
While tiny pinhole leaks can technically be brazed patched, the intense operating pressure (often 400+ PSI for R-410A) inside the coil means the surrounding weakened metal will quickly fail again. For this reason, if an older coil is heavily leaking, replacing the entire A-coil assembly is the only permanent, industry-approved solution.
How frequently should my evaporator coil be cleaned?
We strongly recommend a professional chemical cleaning of the evaporator coil once a year during your annual spring AC tune-up. A clean coil ensures peak SEER efficiency, prevents mold/bacterial growth in the dark cabinet, and prevents the condensation drain pan from clogging.
What is the difference between copper and aluminum coils?
Historically, copper was used for its superior heat transfer properties, but it was highly prone to 'formicary corrosion'—microscopic leaks caused by household chemicals off-gassing. Modern HVAC manufacturers now predominantly use all-aluminum coils, which are highly resistant to this specific type of corrosion and last significantly longer.
Is it safe to run the AC if I suspect the coil is leaking?
No. Running an AC with a leaking coil forces the outdoor compressor to run dry and overheat, leading to catastrophic compressor death. Furthermore, venting pressurized refrigerant into the atmosphere damages the environment and requires expensive recharging.
