Understanding Evaporator Coils
What is it? The evaporator coil is the indoor component of your AC or heat pump system, usually housed within the air handler or attached to the furnace. It consists of a network of highly conductive copper or aluminum tubes filled with rapidly expanding cold liquid residential refrigerant. As warm, humid indoor air is blown over these freezing tubes, the refrigerant absorbs the thermal energy and condensation forms on the coils, actively cooling and dehumidifying the air before it is pushed back deeply into your home's ductwork.
Why it matters: Air conditioning does not 'create' cold air; it merely removes heat. Without a pristine, highly-conductive evaporator coil, your system physically cannot transfer heat from your home's interior to the outside condenser. Even a microscopic layer of dust or pet hair on the coil surfaces can act as an insulating blanket, drastically reducing your system’s heat-transfer efficiency, causing the compressor to overwork, and driving up electricity bills exponentially.
Signs of Failure
- AC runs constantly but fails to lower the ambient home temperature
- Warm, muggy air is blowing from the supply vents
- Thick ice building up on the indoor coil enclosure or outdoor copper lines
- Audible hissing or bubbling sounds (indicating a pressurized refrigerant leak in the coil)
- Unusual water pools around the base of the indoor unit
