Understanding Furnaces
What is it? A forced-air gas furnace is an indoor heating unit that generates profound warmth by safely combusting a fuel source—almost exclusively natural gas in Southern California. The volatile combustion process takes place within a heavy metal chamber, heating up a serpentine 'heat exchanger'. A powerful internal blower motor then forces incoming cold air over the blazing hot outside of the heat exchanger, absorbing the heat and rapidly distributing it through your home's ductwork.
Why it matters: Your furnace is your primary defense against winter cold. Modern ultra-high-efficiency condensing furnaces (96%+ AFUE) utilize secondary stainless-steel heat exchangers to extract almost all the latent heat from the burned gas vapor, saving homeowners significant money on monthly utility bills compared to archaic 80% natural draft models.
Signs of Failure
- System turns on but exclusively blows cold or lukewarm air
- Loud 'boom' or metallic banging noise upon ignition (delayed ignition)
