What to Do If No Power Is Coming to the Thermostat

Troubleshoot a blank or dead thermostat before calling for HVAC repair in Los Angeles.

DifficultyEasy
Est. Timeโฑ๏ธ 20 minutes
Required ToolsFlashlight, Replacement batteries (if applicable)
1Step

Check Thermostat Batteries

If the display is blank, replace the batteries even on hardwired thermostats โ€” many use battery backup to close control relays.
Context / Why

Dead batteries are the most common cause of a thermostat with no power.

2Step

Inspect the Circuit Breaker

Find breakers labeled AC, Air Handler, or Furnace in your electrical panel. Switch fully OFF, then back ON.
Context / Why

A tripped breaker can cut power to the thermostat transformer or air handler.

3Step

Check the Float Switch / Drain Pan

Look for standing water in the indoor unit drain pan. A tripped float switch shuts down the system to prevent ceiling damage.
Context / Why

Clogged condensate drains are a frequent cause of sudden thermostat power loss in LA summers.

Still experiencing issues?

If the thermostat still has no power after these steps, call LC Heating & Air for thermostat repair or wiring diagnosis.
