Take the cover off your current thermostat and select the wires you see to find out if you can upgrade to a smart thermostat.
Select the wires you currently have connected to your thermostat wall plate.
You must select at least an R, Rc, or Rh wire (Power). Please double-check your wall plate.
*Disclaimer: Always turn off power at the breaker before exposing or touching thermostat wires. High voltage systems (thick black/red wires with wire nuts) are NOT compatible with standard smart thermostats.
Most smart thermostats, including Nest and Ecobee, require a C-wire (Common wire) to provide continuous 24V power. Without it, the thermostat may lose Wi-Fi connection or drain its backup battery quickly.
The C-wire completes the 24-volt circuit from your HVAC control board to the thermostat, providing a steady flow of electricity required to power the digital display and Wi-Fi radio.
You can use a C-wire adapter (often included with smart thermostats), run a new thermostat wire bundle, or repurpose an unused fan wire (G-wire) as a common wire.
