How to Clean Your Outdoor AC Condenser Coils
Keep your AC running efficiently by clearing dirt, leaves, and debris from the outdoor unit.
DifficultyModerate
Est. Timeโฑ๏ธ 30 minutes
Required ToolsGarden hose, Screwdriver, Soft brush
1
1Step
Turn Off Power at the Disconnect
Locate the electrical disconnect box mounted on the wall near the outdoor unit. Pull the lever or disconnect block to completely cut 240v power to the system.
Context / Why
Safety first: Water and high voltage electricity do not mix.
2
2Step
Clear Away Visible Debris
Remove any large leaves, sticks, or overgrown brush within 2 feet of the unit. Use a soft brush to sweep away loose dirt from the exterior aluminum fins.
Context / Why
The condenser needs adequate airflow to reject heat. Debris blocks this airflow.
3
3Step
Gently Hose Down the Fins
Using a garden hose with a gentle spray nozzle (no pressure washers!), spray the fins from the inside out or top to bottom to wash away packed-in dirt and dust.
Context / Why
High pressure will easily bend and damage the delicate aluminum fins, which restricts airflow even further.
Still experiencing issues?
If you completed the DIY steps and your system is still not functioning properly, it may require a professional diagnosis.
