How to Fix a Frozen AC Unit

What to do when thick ice builds up on your indoor AC coil or copper lines.

DifficultyModerate
Est. Timeโฑ๏ธ 2-4 hours
1Step

Shut Off the AC Immediately

Switch the thermostat cooling to OFF. Switch the Fan setting to ON to blow ambient air across the coil and accelerate thawing.
Context / Why

Running a frozen AC can damage the compressor beyond repair.

2Step

Check for Airflow Obstructions

Replace a dirty filter, and ensure all supply registers and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture.
Context / Why

A lack of warm airflow across the evaporator coil is the most common cause of coils freezing up.

3Step

Wait for Full Thawing

Do not attempt to chip the ice away manually as you may pierce the copper refrigerant tubing.
Context / Why

It can take several hours for the block of ice to melt naturally. Forcing it can cause an expensive refrigerant leak.

Still experiencing issues?

If you completed the DIY steps and your system is still not functioning properly, it may require a professional diagnosis.
